Sparta school superintendent accepts finance, business director job in Ozark district

Landon Gray, superintendent of the Sparta district, has accepted a job in Ozark.

The Ozark school board voted April 17 to hire Gray, who lives in Ozark, as the executive director of finance and business services for the 2025-26 year. He starts July 1.

Gray has been the Sparta superintendent since mid-2021. In Ozark, he will replace Robert Hedgecorth.

In the role, Gray will oversee the budget, financial reports and the technology department.

Gray said in a news release that he looks forward to working with Ozark Superintendent Lori Wilson and other district leaders to “ensure sound financial practices that benefit our students, staff and community.”

The Sparta district was closed Monday. It was not immediately clear how quickly the district will name a new leader.

Gray started his career more than 20 years ago as a physical education teacher in Branson. He served as an elementary principal in Hollister and Branson before taking the Sparta job.

He has a master’s degree from Missouri State University and a doctorate in educational administration from Lindenwood University.

Hedgecorth, who moved into his current role in 2024, resigned effective the end of 2024-25 year due to family reasons. He previously worked as executive director of support services in the Smithville district.

“While we are saddened to see Dr. Hedgecorth leave, we are confident that Dr. Gray’s strong qualifications, passion for education, and commitment to student success make him an excellent successor,” Wilson said in the release.

“Dr. Gray has deep expertise in financial strategy and operational leadership. We believe he will bring the vision and experience needed to help guide our organization toward sustainable growth and long-term success.”
