Nadi Plates food truck’s first restaurant will take over Crossroads Collective space

On April 15, when east side food hall Crossroads Collective announced its upcoming closure, it dropped a tidbit that a new restaurant would soon be taking over in its place.

We now know what will be moving into the space at 2238 N. Farwell Ave.

Nadi Plates, a family-run, scratch-made Italian food truck and caterer based in Waukesha, will open its first brick-and-mortar restaurant in the former food hall. The 7,000 square-foot space also will serve as the business’ centralized culinary hub for its food truck, catering operations and its stall at the newly opened Food Truck Alley at American Family Field.

The production hub will move from Waukesha and begin operating in the east side space as early as May. The restaurant is expected to come this fall after extensive renovations of the current space.

“This business grew out of our home from conversations around our own kitchen table, and we are so excited to bring it back to where it all began,” chef-owner Nadia Santaniello Bucholtz said in a statement. “With this new space, we’ll not only be closer to our neighbors and our community, but we’ll finally be able to welcome them all to join us at the table to celebrate what we love about Italian cuisine: spending time with people we love around great food, great wine and even better company.”

Santaniello Bucholtz is a first-generation Italian American. Her parents moved to America from Naples, Italy, in the 1960s and opened an Italian restaurant soon after. After working for years in her family’s restaurant, Santaniello Bucholtz in 2021 opened Nadi Plates, specializing in creative takes on classic Italian cuisine, with a menu that includes multiple varieties of pizza, calzones, sandwiches, small plates and snacks, and desserts.

Nadi Plates’ catering service provides food to more than 50 weddings and events a year, and its two food trucks are often seen at Milwaukee-area venues like Lion’s Tail Brewing Co. and Sahale Ale Works, as well as Festa Italiana and PrideFest.

The forthcoming restaurant will blend the company’s scratch-made Italian classics a,nd original recipes with quirky street food staples in a casual-yet-sophisticated dining setting. A full bar will offer wine and craft cocktails, and a European-style espresso bar and cafe will cater to daytime customers.

The restaurant will offer multiple gluten-free and and plant-based options, as well.

This summer, Nadi Plates plans to host pop-up events in the cordoned-off area on Ivanhoe Place, just outside the restaurant.

Crossroads Collective operator New Land Enterprises will transfer its operations to Nadi Plates.

“We knew we had to find a way to work with Nadia and her family as soon as we met them. These are good people with great food,” New Land Enterprises CFO and General Counsel Sheldon Oppermann said in the statement. “We’re incredibly fortunate to be a part of their move home to the east side and the growth of their already successful locally owned business. We know how important great gathering spaces are for creating vibrancy in a neighborhood, and what Nadia and her family have planned will be that neighborhood place where everyone gathers and feels welcomed.”

Nadi Plates encouraged customers to support Crossroads Collective in its final weeks of service. The food hall — with vendors including Scratch Ice Cream, Awi Sushi, Temple Goddess + Adonis Burger Co., Capybara Cafe and the Pharmacy Bar — will close May 8 after seven years in business.
