Large police presence near kids’ park in central Phoenix

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Two kids are in the hospital after being shot near a park in central Phoenix on Monday.

Gunshots rang out just before 6 p.m. across the street from Kids Street Park at the Marc Atkinson Recreation Center at 23rd Avenue and Hazelwood Street, which is north of Indian School Road.

The two victims have injuries that aren’t considered life-threatening, police said. When officers arrived, the shooter or shooters were already gone, authorities said.

Police only said the victims were under the age of 18 but didn’t say whether they knew the suspect or suspects.

One neighbor told Arizona’s Family he heard what he thought were gunshots and screams. The park has been cleared out, and crime tape has been put up around the area.

It’s unclear what led up to the shooting. No suspect descriptions have been released. An investigation is underway.
