PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — A groundbreaking was held for a brand-new performance center for the Portland Thorns and the yet-to-be-named WNBA franchise.
KATU was the first to break the news about the first of its kind dual-sport building back in February.

Representatives from both the Thorns and the WNBA team were at Tuesday’s groundbreaking, as well as Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek and Sen. Ron Wyden.
The center will be built on 12 acres of land in Hillsboro. Raj Sports, the ownership group for the Thorns and the future WNBA team, is repurposing a building previously used by Nike.
The facility will house two full-size soccer fields and two full-size basketball courts and plenty of other amenities.
The center will be built in phases.
Thorns General Manager Karine LeBlanc told KATU this proves Portland is the “epicenter” for women’s sports.
