
GAYLORD ― Welcome back, high school sports.
Those of us in Northern Michigan are used to slow starts to the spring season, but the delay that the late-March ice storm caused this season has been unlike any season in the past. Now, however, were slowly getting back to normal scheduling with the baseball, softball, girls soccer and track and field seasons getting going around Otsego County.
The last seven days were pretty busy; get caught up with the top high school sports performers of the past week:
Brady Shepherd, Gaylord baseball
The Gaylord Blue Devils baseball team got to play its first home games of the season on Friday, April 18, sweeping Gladstone. Junior Brady Shepherd had a great performance on the mound in the 8-0 game one win, pitching all six innings, allowing just three hits and striking out eight batters in his pitching win of the season.
Josias Ferrett, Gaylord baseball
Josias Ferrett was the top hitter for Gaylord over their two wins over Gladstone, totaling three hits, three runs scored and three runs batted in while driving in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the 7-6, walk-off victory in game two.
Charlie Cameron, Gaylord St. Mary baseball
GSM split its Ski Valley Conference doubleheader with Mancelona on Thursday, April 17 with a 5-3 win in game one and a 15-3 loss in game two. Charlie Cameron had the big hit of the game-one win, driving three runs with a home run in the first inning.
Makayla Kozlowski, Gaylord softball
The top-ranked team in Division 2 softball went 2-1 at the Grand Ledge Invite on Saturday, April 19 with wins over Howell and Harper Creek while falling to the hosting Comets. Junior Makayla Kozlowski hit two home runs in the 10-3 win over Howell, going 2-for-3 with the two long balls, six RBI and two runs scored.
Lily Lauer, Gaylord softball
Four Blue Devils hit home runs in the game one win over Harper Creek including Lily Lauer. She went 2-4 with a home run, a double, one RBI and two runs scored.
Jeremiah Witt, JoBurg track and field
The Johannesburg-Lewiston track and field team got its season started on Thursday, April 17 at the Mancelona Invite and senior Jeremiah Witt got his final high school season started in the right way, winning the meet’s 3200-meter race with a time of 10 minutes, 19.56 seconds.
Nate Hummell, JoBurg track and field
A senior well known for his abilities on the football field, Hummell won the pole vault event at the Mancelona Invite by clearing 11 feet, finished fifth in the 100-meter race with a time of 12.06 seconds and placed seventh in the 200m with a time of 25.40 seconds.
