SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (KTIV) – Monday was a perfect day for families to go out and enjoy a beautiful day. One local gym held an event for kids to have some fun while also promoting them to stay healthy.
Monday, April 21, was ‘Healthy Kids Day’ at the Norm Waitt Senior YMCA in South Sioux City.
There, kids could take part in a wide range of activities such as yoga, the long jump, a 40-yard dash, the softball throw and a craft station.
Once kids completed at least five activities, they got to enter their name to win a prize.
The event was free and open to anyone who wanted to take part.
“I think giving the community a space where they can come and be active is a great opportunity for kids to learn different healthy habits, as far as eating, as far as exercise. It’s a great way for us to make it a fun activity,” said Anthony Johnson, Sports, Recreation, and Family Director at the YMCA.
The YMCA holds events throughout the year. Organizers said this one is important to keep kids excited about staying active, especially ahead of the summer months.
“Incorporating some like field day activities as well as some crafts, a healthy snack, it kind of gives that whole picture of a healthy kid’s day. When people think healthy, they sometimes think of just running around in that physical aspect. But we wanted to make sure to include the healthy eating aspect, the arts and crafts, and things like that,” said Abigail Schultz, Early Learning and Youth Development Director at the YMCA.
Students from Morningside University and Briar Cliff University helped with the event.
