Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints delivers food to Alliance Community Pantry

ALLIANCE – A tractor-trailer loaded with 20,000 pounds of food was delivered Monday morning to Alliance Community Pantry.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints delivered the food, which required the use of a forklift to unload.

The truck was due to arrive Tuesday morning, but church officials announced about mid-day Monday that the delivery had already happened at the pantry at 215 E. Market St. Because of the early delivery, pantry officials had to enlist a group of volunteers to assist.

The delivery is part of a church partnership with the Black 14 philanthropy organization. The organization began in the aftermath of a 1969 incident in which a group of 14 football players at the University of Wyoming were dismissed from the team, leading to the loss of their college scholarships.

The players were all Black and had asked their coach if they could wear black armbands during a game against Brigham Young University, in protest of a church policy to not permit Blacks from becoming priests.

Lionel (Dowdy) Grimes was a member of the Black 14, and lives in Ohio. He is an Alliance native who now lives in central Ohio.

In 2021, the church began its donation effort in Alliance, with Grimes selecting the pantry for the donation. Grimes will be at Alliance Community Pantry on Tuesday, according to a news release. His daughter, who also lives in central Ohio, likely will attend with him.
