US sell-off, Tesla & Alphabet earnings, Pope Francis: 3 Things

Let’s get to the three things that you need to know today. First up, US stock futures in the red to kick off the week amid growing concerns on Wall Street that President Trump is serious about his threats to fire Fed Chair Jerome Powell, sparking a selloff in the dollar and treasuries. The so-called sell America trade is gathering steam, sending gold to a record high. Meantime, Trump’s trade war is in focus as China threatens retaliation against countries that are striking deals with the US that could hurt Beijing’s interests. This comes as the Trump administration is reportedly planning to use tariff negotiations to pressure US partners to limit their dealings with China. Plus, earnings front and center for investors this week, with more than 140 companies out with results, including Tesla and Alphabet. Tesla will report after the bell Tuesday. Redbush analyst Dan Ives calling this a code red moment for the company if CEO Elon Musk doesn’t take a step back from Doge and focus full time on the EV maker. And Google parent company Alphabet reports Thursday, bringing back into focus the AI trade and if Big Tech’s AI investments are paying off.

And Pope Francis, an Argentine Jesuit who became the first Roman Catholic pontiff from the Americas, has died. The Vatican making the announcement this morning, tributes pouring in from around the world. Francis made waves during his papacy as a reformer who often rattled the Catholic Church’s most conservative quarters, but found popularity among progressives who embraced his championing of social justice efforts. His death comes after spending weeks in the hospital recently fighting pneumonia. Pope Francis was 88 years old.
