Store clerk shot and killed at South Memphis market, MPD says

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Gunfire erupted at a South Memphis market Sunday night, killing a store clerk, police said.

Memphis Police (MPD) said it happened at Sam’s Food Market on Mississippi Boulevard. Police said officers were called to the market just after 9 p.m. for a shooting and found a man had been shot. 

MPD said it all started with an argument inside the store, adding that the confrontation spilled outside, where the clerk was shot. Officers arrived to find the victim had been shot several times. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died, police said.

MPD said that investigators obtained surveillance footage showing the suspected shooter trying to leaving without paying from items he had taken from the store. The clerk tried to stop but “while struggling over the items, the suspect fired several shots, striking the victim and killing him,” police said. 

Police said the suspect is believed to have been wearing a black hoodie and jeans at the time of the shooting.
