CATOOSA COUNTY, Ga. — A man and woman in Catoosa County are spending the next few years in prison after a jury convicted them of remarkable cruelty to their own children, which in this case included a home of squalor, using Airsoft guns as punishment, and allowing a girl’s half-brother to molest her.
A release by Lookout Mountain Judicial District Clayton Fuller did not identify the parents, in order to protect the identities of the children involved.
Fuller’s release says a jury convicted the pair back in March of 2 counts of first degree cruelty to children and 2 counts of second degree cruelty to children.
That release shows the children involved grew up in an extremely challenging environment.
That included living in a mobile home without adequate heat and no hot water. The only source of running water was a bathtub.
Evidence showed that the home was in a state of disrepair and filth,’ Fuller says in his release. ‘Codes Enforcement found the residence to be unlivable. The father was an electrician and testified to earning $1100-$1800 a week after taxes.
On top of the squalor, Fuller says the couple repeatedly punished their teenage children by shooting them with Airsoft guns.
They also restricted what their daughter could eat, even padlocking the refrigerator to keep her from having access.
This created another disturbing situation for the girl. Fuller says the victim’s older half-brother promised her food if she would perform sexual acts. That half-brother was sentenced to life, and must serve 25 years without the chance of parole.
Fuller says both the man and the woman in this case were sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Parents should be the first in line to protect children, but if they fail, we will step into that breach of our most basic foundations of our community,” Fuller said. “The wickedness of a parent who treats their own flesh and blood with such cruelty and neglect will be met here in Northwest Georgia with the full force of justice.
