Luke Bryan Celebrates Easter With Heartfelt Performance of “Jesus ‘Bout My Kids” on ‘American Idol’

Country star Luke Bryan has spent the last seven years critiquing the next generation of musical talent as a judge on American Idol. However, the Georgia-born crooner has remained a force in country music nearly two decades after his 2007 debut I’ll Stay Me. Seemingly never slowing down, Bryan continues touring alongside his stint on the long-running singing reality competition show. And he again pulled double duty during Sunday’s (April 20) special Easter episode when he took the stage to perform his song “Jesus ‘Bout My Kids.”

Luke Bryan Gives Spiritual Performance on ‘American Idol’

Sunday (April 20) marked a special episode of American Idol. While the final 24 contestants continued their quest toward the cash prize and recording contract, they also—for the first time in the show’s history—celebrated the Christian holiday Easter with their performances.

Named “Songs of Faith,” the episode featured gospel and faith-based performances from the remaining season 23 hopefuls. Various celebrities also made appearances, including American Idol judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood.

Bryan performed “Jesus ‘Bout My Kids,” off last year’s Mind of a Country Boy album. Onstage, he sang about praying for his teenage sons, Bo and Tate: I used to talk to my kids about Jesus / Now I talk to Jesus ’bout my kids.

A strong Christian faith is something that the five-time Entertainer of the Year and wife Caroline have intentionally tried to cultivate, Bryan told Taste of Country Nights last October.

“We have tried to raise our boys in a household that understands Jesus and I love that the song really speaks about the journey of being a parent,” he said in a recent interview with TV Insider. “Every line has a specific meaning and purpose that parents everywhere can relate to.”

This Is His First Christian Song

While Luke Bryan has referenced God in interviews, he never explicitly sang about his Christian faith until 2024’s “Jesus ‘Bout My Kids.”

“This is a song that I could go to any church of this world of ours, any Christian church, and really sing this song and it can be interpreted very Christian-like,” he said. “I think it’s a beautifully written song that every parent can really relate to. Especially raising your kids in a Christian household, which is what my wife and I strive to do.”
