It is about to get very busy on the roads and highways across New York State as we are finally getting some good weather to enjoy! Hopefully it lasts this time!
The on again, off again, spring weather has made it tough to break out that motorcycle or vintage/specialty car that you might have stored away for sunny days! But it is spring in New York State and the salt is finally getting washed off of the road. Let’s ride!
But before you hit the highway, there are some laws to consider here in New York State-even if you don’y ride!

I was speaking with our sons over the last weekend about dirt bikes and motorcycles. A family member had offered a small dirt bike to us for them to get started on. Mom and I are still going back and forth about it.
However, it got me thinking about kids on motorcycles and what New York’s laws are.
Motorcycle Licenses For Teens In New York State
The laws in New York State about riding a motorcycle are pretty clear. For those over 16 you can start the process of getting either a Class MJ or Class M license. New York’s Healh website says “The NY Department of Motor Vehicles will upgrade your Class MJ license to a standard Class M license when you turn 18 years old OR are at least 17 years old and can provide the New York State DMV with a Student Certificate of Completion (MV-285) from an accredited driver’s education program”.
Obviously, it depends on whether or not you are ready for your kid to ride or if they are ready and mature enough to get out on the roads.
What About Kids As Passengers?
This is where I thought the law was interesting. Here in New York State, if you want to ride that motorcycle with a child on the back of the bike as your passenger, there doesn’t seem to be any laws against it or minimum age for them to ride with you.
“Children that ride with you must be able to do so safely. They should be old enough to understand the dangers of motorcycle riding as well as the importance of riding safely. If children do ride, they need the proper gear, just like adults”.
Look Twice and Save A Life
If you are on a bike, or in a car this summer, pay attention to what is happening around you. The truth is, most drivers in cars are not looking for people on two wheels. The other reality is that SOME on motorcycles are not looking for people making turns or bad decisions behind the wheel.
Have a safe and fun summer and hopefully the weather stays good enough for plenty of riding this year.
