Golden eggs turn into golden opportunities for local kids

LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – A group of kids were cashing some checks, thanks to a special Easter tradition.

The children received the checks from 6th Ward Councilman Derry Glenn’s annual Easter egg hunt, where four children each found a golden egg containing a $100 bank account.

In partnership with other city council members and Savior’s Grace Ministries, they helped the children set up their newly acquired accounts at State Bank.

The goal is to teach the kids about finances and saving money.

“This is a win win for our kids. We’re hoping that everybody adopts something like this, because right now it’s very crucial for our kids learn about the banking system. That’s why we continue doing this, and this is our fourth year doing it. Making sure our kids be able to use the banking system, learn how to use the banking system, and learn to save money,” said Derry Glenn, Lima’s 6th Ward councilman.

“Financial literacy is important at in any age bracket. If we can get them young, the Bible says to trade up a child and where they should go when they get older, they won’t depart from it. So if we put it in them, it’ll grow with them, and then they’ll be responsible adults with their money, their finances, and their families,” said Claytonia Logan, pastor with Savior’s Grace Ministries.

If your child is under the age of 18, be sure that a parent or guardian is present to co-sign your child’s bank account.
