From the Ag Information Network, this is today’s Fruit Grower Report. Representatives Dan Newhouse, of Washington, and Chellie Pingree, of Maine, have relaunched the bipartisan Congressional Food Recovery Caucus.

During National Food Waste Prevention Week, April 7-13,

Newhouse, the Sunnyside Republican, said this is a renewing of efforts to fight food loss and food waste nationwide …

NEWHOUSE … “Part of the goal of the Food Recovery Caucus is to be more efficient in our, not only our food production, but also the distribution of food, getting it to the people that need it.”

The amount of food that goes to waste, Newhouse says is astonishing …

NEWHOUSE … “I think the figure is about 40% of food is wasted in the United States. And so, we’re trying to make sure that we do a better job of that.”

Especially, Newhouse says when there are folks who need it …

NEWHOUSE … “We have pockets of the country where there’s a lot of hungry people. There’s a lot of people in need. And so, matching that need with the available supply in the most efficient way possible, and healthy way possible, is the goal of the caucus.”

Because, Newhouse says it’s important …

NEWHOUSE … “Miss Pingree, from the state of Maine, and I have been working on this effort for a couple of years now. And I think it, it accomplishes overall a couple things. Certainly, we’re hoping to improve the utilization of our food. Like I said, getting it in the hands of people that need it and in the most affordable way.”

Tune in tomorrow for more on the Food Recovery Caucus.
