East Moline event gets kids dropping eggs, not hunting for them

With the help of the city’s fire department, East Moline families took part in a different kind of Easter-themed event.

EAST MOLINE, Ill. — The East Moline Public Library changed the Easter-egg-hunt landscape around the Quad Cities, organizing an “egg drop” on April 19, just in time for the Easter holiday.

Art and science combined to present a unique challenge for QC kids in attendance. In collaboration with the East Moline Fire Department, the library got children to drop their eggs, instead of hunting for them.

The goal of an egg drop is to build a contraption capable of protecting eggs falling from tall heights. Library staff achieved that by inviting the fire department’s firetrucks and having them park in lots outside.

Creativity revealed itself in kids’ creations, with some using cotton balls and marshmallows to cushion their eggs and others constructing working parachutes.

Organizers told News 8 that the event creates a more inclusive environment for those who don’t recognize Easter as others might.

“Easter is not, obviously, a holiday that everyone celebrates, so we wanted to do something that recognized the holiday and the time of year, but also is something that everyone can do. It’s science,” Abby Sauer, an adult-service coordinator, said. “We just didn’t want to do Easter; we wanted to do something for everyone.”

This year was the first time the library organized such an event, with staff hoping to do it again next year, based on its success. Although not all eggs wound up protected, many successfully reached the ground intact and remained ready to be painted.
