Yankees hit again with food poisoning | ‘Somebody poisoned me in my sleep!’

TAMPA, Fla. — Yankees catcher Austin Wells enjoyed his day off Thursday. His body felt good resting after playing four days in a row and he was excited that his club stretched its season-long winning streak to four games with a 6-3 victory over the Rays.

“I went to bed feeling great,” Wells said Friday. “This morning, not so great.”

Similarly to Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger two weeks ago in Detroit, Wells woke up at 7 a.m., with food poisoning.

Bellinger blamed his one-day sickness on wings.

What did Wells eat that made him sick?

“I don’t really know,” he said before jokingly adding, “Somebody poisoned me in my sleep!”

The Yankees can’t explain it.

“I feel like we’ve had a handful of guys from spring to now have these 24-hour bugs or whatever,” manager Aaron Boone said. “They pass it on. So I don’t know what’s going on.”

With Wells unavailable to start Friday, rookie J.C. Escarra was in the lineup for the second night in a row.

A first-time big leaguer this season, Escarra, 29, went into the weekend hitting .188 with three hits in 16 bats and one RBI over five games, four as a starter.

“I have a ton of confidence with J.C. any day that he’s in there,” Boone said.

As of early Friday evening, Boone was hoping that Wells would be available to come off the bench in Friday’s game if he’s needed. The skipper also was optimistic that Wells would be over his sickness in time to start Saturday’s 4:10 p.m., game.
