Food for Thought: 24 violations at this week’s low performer

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Lubbock health inspectors checked out the cleanliness of more than 80 food establishments this week.

Out of all of those locations — two landed on the Food for Thought list.

Popeyes at 2505 82nd had 24 violations

  • Raw chicken was not properly cooked. It only reached a temperature of 155 degrees. It must reach an internal temperature of at least 165 degrees to ensure harmful bacteria are killed.
  • Rice and mashed potatoes were not hot enough. They must be at least 135°.
  • Coleslaw was not 41 degrees or below.
  • There was no thermometer in the reach-in cooler.
  • A sanitizer solution was at toxic levels.
  • A sanitizer bucket was on top of a prep table.
  • The sanitizer in the three compartment sink was not strong enough. The person in charge stated the sanitizer dispenser was broken.
  • The backflow prevention device on the mop sink did not work. This is a repeat violation, and a $175 fee was issued to the facility.
  • The inspector notes due to the number and the nature of the violations, management did not show proper food safety knowledge.

  • Scoop used to dispense bulk food item was stored in the food items and did not contain a designated handle.

  • Single-use cup was used to dispense frozen shrimp in the prep station.
  • Single-use paper cup was reused as a scoop to dispense bulk foods.
  • Bulk storage container containing a white powder was not labeled to identify the contents.
  • Floor drain next to the walk in cooler was heavily soiled with a buildup of food debris.
  • Floor of the walk in cooler was heavily soiled with a buildup of food debris.
  • Interior surface of the reach in cooler was heavily soiled with food residue.
  • A heavy accumulation of flour and other debris was present on the swamp cooler unit in the kitchen.
  • Vent cover of the walk in freezer was heavily soiled with a buildup of dust and other debris.
  • Bulk storage food container had a heavy accumulation of flour on the container.
  • Ceiling tile not installed properly, gap present.

According to the report most of the violations were corrected while the inspector was there.

Now to this week’s good news. There’s only one Top Performer on the list:

  • Chick-Fil-A at 312 University
