BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Alabama High School Athletic Association is taking steps to better regulate student transfers in high school sports. This month, the association’s board approved the creation of a task force dedicated to collecting transfer data.
The association highlighted the “bona fide move” as a primary compliance concern. This issue arises when a parent transfers their student to a school without moving into that district’s limits, rendering the student ineligible for athletics. The association aims to gather data on this and other non-compliance issues.
Chris Yeager, head football coach at Mountain Brook High School, said, “We started collecting information as far as the number of transfers that are incurring. Is there an increase? Is it creating an issue?”
The task force will comprise principals, superintendents, athletic directors, and coaches. The data collected will help determine if transfer issues impact fairness in Alabama high school sports.
Yeager added, “Is the transfer issue affecting those three core values of our association: fair play, safety of our players, and education through athletics? And it looks as though it is.”
The task force has not yet released any data but will continue to collect information to present to the athletic board.
