Wind-fueled fire damages West Milwaukee Pick ‘N Save, forces food disposal

Windy conditions are getting the blame for a smoky fire that damaged a West Milwaukee grocery store Tuesday. The Milwaukee Fire Department responded to an initial report of a dumpster fire around 11 a.m. at the Pick ‘n Save store on Miller Parkway near Lincoln Avenue. When fire crews arrived, they found the fire had spread from the dumpster to cardboard and plastic crates and the flames were being forced towards the building because of strong westerly winds, forcing the evacuation of the store. The flames spread high enough to damage the roof, which is more than two stories high. “We realized with the wind working against us and the amount of fuel load at the rear of the store we called for a second alarm assignment to bring additional resources in,” Deputy Fire Chief Ron Firnrohr said.”There is some damage to the rear of the building, particularly the parapet at the top, there was some fire. The fire was intensified enough that it got under some siding at the top,” Firnrohr said. After the fire department cleared the scene, Pick ‘n Save staff could be seen throwing out cart after cart of fresh meat and produce into dumpsters to be disposed of, apparently because smoke entered the store during the fire. The Southwest Suburban Health Department was called to the scene, but it’s unclear if they ordered the food disposal or if the decision was made by Pick ‘n Save management. In a statement to WISN 12 News, a Pick ‘n Save spokesperson said “We want to thank the Milwaukee Fire Department, West Allis Fire Department, and West Milwaukee Police for their rapid response when our Pick ‘n Save store at 2201 Miller Parkway experienced a fire outside of the store earlier.”The store is currently closed. We appreciate our teams who are currently assisting in-store so we can reopen as quickly as possible.” The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
