Willing Workers of White Hall Extension Homemakers Club met March 25 at the White Hall Library for their regular meeting.
Vice President Dee Kindrick welcomed everyone. Jim Wilson blessed the food and members enjoyed a meal provided by Sarah Payton, Kay Cromwell and Jo Ann Carr.
Tonia Dalby read the Thought of the Month: “The more you eat right, the chunkier your bank account gets.” Kindrick led members in the Homemaker’s Creed. Cromwell read the Handy Hint: “Don’t stop eating plants.”
Jim Wilson read the Inspiration from Genesis 1:29. Carr called the roll with members answering the question: What is your favorite vegetable? Nine members were present.
Cromwell presented the program on “Shopping on a Budget.” She said:
Plan ahead. Make a list and stick to it to avoid buying unnecessary items. If items are on special or on sale and it is something you will use, buy it. She said to be a seasonal shopper, purchase fresh fruits and vegetables in season for better flavor and lower cost.
Cromwell said the most nutritious foods are around the border of the grocery store (fruits and vegetables, milk and dairy products, meats and breads). The inner aisles have more of the processed food, which might be quicker to prepare but include many more additives. She said to pay attention to nutrition facts on the labels. She also said to shop for items on the upper and lower shelves as most stores stock the most expensive items at the consumer’s eye level.
She also said never go grocery shopping on an empty stomach. Always eat before going to the grocery store. Shopping while hungry could lead you to buy more than you had intended. Evenings and weekends tend to be busier times for grocery shopping, so plan for the extra time needed. She also recommended the Mediterranean cooking classes at the Extension Office as they are really healthy. She said that Arkansas has the most home food waste of all states. Leadership Development: Elizabeth Wall told members about Cooklist, a free app for your grocery list.
Kindrick reminded members about the Mental Health Walk on May 3 at White Hall City Park and encouraged everyone to participate.
Extension Homemakers will have a booth at the Home and Garden Show on April 5 at the White Hall Community Center and encourage anyone that is interested in becoming a member of Extension come see them in their booth.
The next club meeting will be on April 22 at the White Hall Library. Details: Mary Ann Kizer at (870) 534-1033.
