Target has recalled one of its Good & Gather baby food products for elevated lead levels.
The retailer issued a voluntary recall on March 12 for 26,500 units of Good & Gather baby Pea, Zucchini, Kale & Thyme Vegetable Purèe, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
“At Target, we’re committed to providing safe, high-quality products for our guests. We require our suppliers to comply with all applicable food safety standards and federal, state, and local regulations,” the company said in a statement to USA TODAY. “This recall involved a limited amount of product, which we took immediate action to remove from our shelves.”
The recall was listed as a Class II recall by the FDA, meaning the product is recalled because the “use of, or exposure to, a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote,” according to the agency.
Lead is of special concern for babies, toddlers and children because even small amounts of lead may affect behavior, cognitive development and academic achievement, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.
