LMPD ‘Paws on Patrol’ initiative gives comfort to kids in crisis

The Louisville Metro Police Foundation and Kosair for Kids aim to comfort children in the community, one teddy bear at a time.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A new initiative from the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) aims to give kids going through traumatic experiences a touch of comfort.

The Louisville Metro Police Foundation, in partnership with LMPD and Kosair for Kids is launching the Paws on Patrol program.

It’s a “heartfelt initiative aimed at bringing comfort to Louisville’s most vulnerable citizens during their most difficult moments, while also fostering stronger relationships between the community and their protectors, the officers of the LMPD.”

The new program equips officers with a small teddy bear dressed as an LMPD officer. These bears are to be given to children and other individuals experiencing trauma, loss or crisis.

The companions will serve as a gesture of hope and comfort for those who see them.

“This program would not be possible without Kosair for Kids,” Executive Director of the Louisville Metro Police Foundation Rebecca Grignon-Reker said. “Their belief in the power of compassion and healing has brought Paws on Patrol to life, and we’re proud to work alongside them to uplift our community.”

On Wednesday, officers will be collecting the bears that will help kids across the city in their time of need.

The initiative is “a powerful example of how partnerships and purpose-driven outreach can strengthen the bonds between law enforcement and the people they serve,” a press release said.

LMPD will soon be bringing help and comfort across the community, one bear at a time.
