With nearly 30 years in the district, David steps into the role after Chad Alligood’s resignation.
GRAY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Jones County Board of Education named Charles David as the district’s new athletic director during its meeting Tuesday night, approving the longtime coach and educator following an executive session.
David, currently Clifton Ridge Middle School’s athletic director, has spent nearly three decades in the Jones County School System. He now moves into the high school role, filling the vacancy left by Chad Alligood, who resigned earlier this year.
Jones County High School Principal Dennis Woolfolk spoke at the meeting Tuesday.
“When I started at Jones County, I had someone that took me under their wings over at Clifton Ridge, and ever since then, our relationship has been a brotherhood—not just colleagues—it’s gone beyond that,” Woolfolk said. “Now I have the honor and blessing, pleasure of continuing that brotherhood with Charles David coming to be our athletic director.”
David also spoke, reflecting on his 29 years in the system and thanking his mentors, including Superintendent Charles Lundy and Woolfolk.
“I never thought I’d be here,” David said. “This is my home. This is where I’ve always been.”
David said he’s coached everything from girls softball to varsity football and is proud to help continue building the district’s athletic programs.
“I think we’ve made some great hires moving forward this year with athletics,” David said. “We want to be the whole Jones County. We want to bring it all back together and kind of do that ‘all for one’ thing again, ’cause it’s been a while.”
The board hired Justin Montgomery as the high school’s new head football coach in February. Montgomery joins from Carrollton High School, where he served as defensive coordinator.
Tuesday night’s vote finalizes the district’s two major athletic hires this semester. Both Alligood and former head football coach Mike Chastain signed resignation agreements on January 31, effective June 30.
