LYONS, NEBRASKA—The Center for Rural Affairs is looking for food producers in central Nebraska who want to sell locally produced food.
The Center has nearly $150,000 available to buy food from local producers from April to August. The food will then be donated to local food pantries and other eligible institutions.
“This is a great opportunity for producers who have extra produce this summer or are looking for an extra stream of income,” said Angelyn Wang, local foods associate with the Center. “This project ensures that community members are getting fresh, local food during garden season.”
Eligible food includes fresh fruits and vegetables, meat, dairy, honey, maple syrup, and certain grains like buckwheat.
The food will go to food pantries and institutions in Custer, Blaine, Dawson, Loup, Adams, Hall, Buffalo, Garfield, Wheeler, Valley, Greeley, and Sherman counties in Nebraska. Producers within 400 miles of the distribution locations may be eligible.
These purchases are supported by the Local Foods Purchase Assistance program. While similar funds in other states have recently been revoked by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, funds for these purchases are confirmed as available, Wang said.
In addition, volunteers are needed to take the purchased food from the points of origin to the food pantries or institutions.
