Arkansas has submitted a waiver to ban some food from Arkansas’ Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The waiver would remove soft drinks, unhealthy drinks and candy from SNAP food stamp benefits. In addition, it requests the addition of rotisserie chicken to the list of eligible SNAP benefits. Gov. Sarah Sanders said this is to encourage healthy choices for those receiving benefits. Sanders said the waiver is the first step in broader food stamp reform. She said this is not about taking away food choices from Arkansans, but about keeping taxpayers from covering the cost of what she referred to as “poor health decisions.” Sanders announced the waiver at a press conference with U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins and the secretary of the Arkansas Department of Human Services, Kristi Putnam. Sanders said the waiver was mailed to the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Tuesday, opening a 30-day public comment period in the state.
