YOLK’S ON GRAVITY: Marblehead kids conquer the egg drop

Marbleheaders refused to let the rain crush their Easter spirit as they filled the community center parking lot for the third annual Marblehead Egg Drop Challenge on Sunday. About 75 kids showed up to the event carrying their homemade egg protecting devices, signed in and gathered to watch the show.

Each device was uniquely crafted and contestants used different materials to cushion their eggs, from cardboard boxes and foam to balloons. Before the contest, kids placed a single egg egg in each contraption. The devices were then thrown from the top of the Marblehead Fire Department’s ladder truck. If the egg survived the fall in tact, then the team won a gold medal.

The Rec & Parks Department has worked with the Fire Department to plan the egg drop for the last few years.

“I think it’s bringing people together,” said Karla Strobel, who organized the event. “We’re all in our own busy lives and it’s a great time for everybody to come together and just do something that’s fun and creative.”

Strobel believes that this was a great learning opportunity for the kids to learn the values of hard work, creativity and working together.

“I think they’re learning a lot about project management,” said Strobel. “They come in with an idea, they build something creative and go on from there. I saw someone with balloons, I saw some people with tupperware, it was really great and creative.”
