Who says you can’t have an eventful at bat in April? With the help of a teammate, Bryce Harper had one he’ll likely never forgot during a game against the San Francisco Giants at Citizens Bank Park on April 14.
Before stepping to the plate, the Philadelphia Phillies first baseman was handed a blue bat by shortstop Trea Turner signifying to everyone in the park the Harper family is expecting a baby boy.
The bat arrived at the park before the game to help with the gender reveal, according to Phillies TV broadcaster Tom McCarthy.
It was a joyous moment for Harper and the Phillies, despite the 10-4 loss to the Giants.
Turner was prepared with both a pink and blue bat to let the slugger know what gender his newest addition would be.
“I was confused at first, but I think he wanted to share that moment with us,” Turner said, according to mlb.com. “He was nice enough to ask me to do it. I thought it was a nice moment for him and his family. I think they were all watching from up top.”
Turner told mlb.com that he had to “mess with him a little bit” when it was time to hand Harper the bat. Harper thought he was having a girl, so Turner faked him out before ultimately handing him the powder-blue bat.
According to mlb.com, the bats were from Victus Sports in King of Prussia.
How many kids does Bryce Harper have?
The upcoming addition will be the fourth child for Harper and his wife, Kayla Varner.
Their first son, Krew Aron, was born on Aug. 22, 2019 and their daughter, Brooklyn Elizabeth, was born on Nov. 12, 2020. Their third child, Kamryn Ray Harper, was born on April 22, 2024.
