Sports Editor Matt Daniels with a look at what’s going on around the area:
Illinois women’s basketball coach Shauna Green added two transfers this past weekend in Maddie Webber (Villanova) and Aaliyah Gutyon (Iowa).
Three reasons we love sports today
➜ 1. The Illinois women’s basketball program has had immense success mining the transfer portal in the Shauna Green era. So keep an eye on what Maddie Webber and Aaliyah Guyton bring to the Illini next season after committing and signing with Illinois this past weekend.
➜ 2. Webber is a 5-foot-11 guard who averaged 13.3 points and started all 36 games last season at Villanova. She earned Second Team All-Big East honors with the Wildcats, who went 21-15, and has two seasons of eligibility left.
➜ 3. Guyton is a 5-7 guard who averaged 4.7 points in 29 games last season at Iowa. The Peoria native and daughter of former Indiana standout A.J. Guyton has three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Former Illini standout Brian Campbell tied for 32nd in his first Masters.
Numbers game: $121,538
dollars is how much former Illini Brian Campbell took home after playing in his first Masters. The 32-year-old Campbell tied for 32nd and capped his weekend with his best round on Sunday by carding a 4-under 68 that left him at 1-over 289 in the first major this year. Campbell is in the field for this week’s RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, S.C., along with fellow former Illini Thomas Detry, Adrien Dumont de Chassart and Nick Hardy.

Crowd control
Three events I’m paying attention to
➜ 1. SIUE at Illinois baseball. The Illini (20-13, 9-6 Big Ten) have won their last three Big Ten series, but will try to avoid a second straight Tuesday night nonconference loss against an in-state opponent — Illinois State beat the Illini 14-4 last Tuesday night — when the Cougars (15-19) visit for a 6 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday.
➜ 2. Salt Lake Bees at Sacramento River Cats. Danville native Chuckie Robinson is hitting .324 with nine RBI for the Bees, the Class AAA affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels, entering Tuesday night’s game.
➜ 3. Monticello at Mattoon baseball. Nonconference test for the visiting Sages (11-3) against a tradition-rich program like Mattoon (9-4) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Coach’s corner
Three questions with Villa Grove girls’ basketball coach Jeff Carleton:
➜ 1. My favorite sports teams are … any Illini team and the Dallas Cowboys.
➜ 2. Three coaches I’d like to have dinner with are … Jimmy Johnson, Mike Krzyzewski and Shauna Green.
➜ 3. My biggest pet peeve is … being late. I’d rather be two hours early than two seconds late.
