Tax Day deals and freebies: Krispy Kreme, Burger King and more

Tax Day is here, and Americans filing their returns can also cash in on a host of deals and giveaways.

To ease the sting of the April 15 deadline, dozens of national chains are offering free food, discounts and limited-time promotions, most for one day only. From $0.01 cheeseburgers to buy-one-get-one spaghetti, here’s where you can eat well on Tax Day.

Before making plans, consumers should verify participation with local branches, as some deals are only available at select locations or require specific promo codes.

Tax Day Filing Deadline: What To Know

The federal deadline for filing 2024 income tax returns is Tuesday, April 15, 2025. The IRS requires all taxpayers to file by midnight local time or to file for an extension by that date to avoid penalties and interest. Taxpayers can file electronically using commercial tax preparation software, authorized providers or directly through the IRS Free File service for qualifying individuals. Paper returns must be postmarked by April 15.

An automatic six-month extension can be obtained by submitting Form 4868, which extends the filing deadline to October 15, 2025. However, this extension does not apply to tax payments, which are still due by April 15. The IRS emphasizes that penalties for late payment may apply even if the return itself is filed later with an approved extension.

• Burger King: Royal Perks members can get a cheeseburger for just 1 cent with a purchase of $1 or more through the app or website.
• Krispy Kreme: Buy a dozen Original Glazed or Assorted doughnuts and get a second dozen Original Glazed for the price of state sales tax, per a press release. It’s the second consecutive year the chain has offered the deal.
• Shake Shack: From now until April 27, foodies can get a free Black Truffle Burger, Black Truffle ‘Shroom burger or Black Truffle Parmesan Fries with a purchase of at least $10.40 when they use code TRUFFLETAX online, in the app or at in-store kiosks.
• Hooters: Certain appetizers—including mozzarella sticks, fried pickles, buffalo shrimp—are $4.15 at participating locations when you order through the Hooters app.
• White Castle: Get 15 percent off one order on April 15 with discount code from their website.
• Denny’s: Grab an Original Grand Slam or All-American Slam and get a second one for $1, dine-in only, until May 9.
• GoPuff: Alani and Prime energy drinks discounted—shoppers can get three drinks for $6 as part of a Tax Day promo.
• Round Table Pizza: Use code RTP220 to get $7 off any large or XL pizza from April 11 through April 17, at participating locations.
• Great American Cookies: Get a free Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake slice when you buy one, available in-store.
• Fazoli’s: Enjoy a buy-one-get-one-free Baked Spaghetti with code TAX25 at participating locations.
• The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf: On April 15 only, customers can get a free size upgrade—order a large, pay for a regular. Valid one time per person.
• Potbelly: Use code BOGO to get a free Original sandwich with the purchase of another on April 15.
• Smoothie King: Rewards members can receive $3 off a 20 oz. or larger smoothie when using the app.
• California Tortilla: Get a free small bag of chips and queso, or chips and salsa, with a purchase by using code “1040” in-person, online and on the app.
• BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse: Save $10 off a $40 dine-in, takeout or delivery order with promo code 10OFF40.

What If You Miss the Deadline To File Your Taxes?

Those who are owed refunds face no penalties for late filing but are encouraged to submit as soon as possible to avoid processing delays. Taxpayers who miss the deadline and owe money should still file their return and pay as much as possible to minimize penalties.

If you can’t file by April 15, the IRS advises requesting an extension using Form 4868, which gives you until October 15 to submit your return. However, an extension to file is not an extension to pay—penalties and interest begin accruing immediately on any unpaid taxes.
