KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WCYB). — While a big portion of some food banks’ funding comes from federal and state funds, a local food bank said right now, they are still okay and they’re working hard to make sure nobody goes hungry.
Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee has one mission, to feed the hungry in our region. After USDA cut some funding. I wanted to touch base with our local Second Harvest in Kingsport.
As far as the commodities from the USDA, yes, we have seen some cuts, but we know that some of those cuts have been reinstated. We have been working with our lawmakers, working together to make sure that happens, but what we know a large portion of those commodities are still intact, said Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee Executive Director, Rhonda Chafin.
Executive Director of Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee, Rhonda Chafin told me there are still plenty of USDA provided nonperishables in stock.
Now that it is holy week, Second Harvest is preparing to distribute food to organizations in need.
80% of the partners we serve are faith-based organizations. They are working very hard to make sure their food programs provide people with food they need, said Chafin.
Chafin told News 5 in the next few months.
We are looking at things like summer feeding, we are looking at making sure children and families have food when school gets out, said Chafin. We rely on volunteers, so looking to our community for volunteers this summer is really important to our organization.
Chafin said even though there are still uncertainties, she is hopeful that the community will come together to support.
We’re very hopeful that we will receive the resources that we need to feed those in Northeast Tennessee, to make sure people in our area have food, Chafin said.
