
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After earning her team-leading seventh singles win against Cincinnati, freshman Laura Villanueva Morillo has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by University Apartments.
Villanueva Morillo is just one of two players with at least three singles victories in conference play. Additionally, her performance helped WVU earn its second conference win of the season.
West Virginia’s two conference victories have come on the road this year, marking the first time the Mountaineers have won multiple conference road matches in one season since joining the Big 12.
The Mountaineers will now face No. 53 Kansas State in the opening round of the Big 12 Championships on April 16 at 7 p.m. ET, inside of the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco, Texas.
This Week in Baseball: West Virginia plays four games this week, beginning with a road contest at Marshall on Tuesday at 6 p.m. … the Mountaineers return home for a series against Cincinnati, April 17-19 … first pitch on Thursday and Friday is set for 6:30 p.m. with Saturday slated for 2 p.m. ET.
Last Week in Baseball: The Mountaineers swept Houston on the road to improve to 30-4 overall and 10-3 in the Big 12 to move into first place … WVU defeated the Cougars, 9-2, on Friday … redshirt senior Griffin Kirn tossed 6.0 innings while allowing just two runs and striking out five to improve to 4-0 on the season … senior Reese Bassinger earned his fifth save with 3.0 hitless innings … redshirt junior Chase Swain had three RBI while juniors Skylar King and Logan Sauve each had three hits … on Saturday, the Mountaineers won 9-8 behind two RBI each from senior Kyle West, freshman Gavin Kelly, and Swain … West Virginia completed the sweep with a 11-4 victory on Sunday as graduate student Jack Kartsonas pitched 7.0 scoreless innings while allowing just two hits in his first start of the season … Sauve hit two home runs while West hit one.
Notes: West Virginia has the highest winning percentage in the nation at .882 … the Mountaineers are one of just eight teams with 30 wins … it is the 20th 30 win season in program history and fourth straight … it is the second best start to a season in program history only behind the 1963 team that started 30-2 … in the latest D1Baseball poll, West Virginia enters in at No. 24 … the Mountaineers lead the Big 12 with a 3.81 ERA and in scoring with 9.2 runs per game … WVU is also tops in the Big 12 in hits/9 (7.11), OBP (.424), sacrifice flies (23), stolen bases (86), stolen bases/game (2.53), and WHIP (1.29).

This week in Track and Field: West Virginia will split the weekend at the Bryan Clay Invitational and Mountaineer Twilight on April 16-19 … the Bryan Clay Invitational will begin on Wednesday at the Cougar Athletic Stadium in Azusa, California while the Mountaineer Twilights starts Friday at the Track & Field Complex at Mylan Park in Morgantown.
Last week in Track and Field: The Mountaineers competed at the Bison Outdoor Classic on April 12-13 which was held at the Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania … WVU’s weekend performance was highlighted by a slew of Mountaineers who marked personal bests in their respective events.
This Week in Rowing: West Virginia will host its annual Gold and Blue Regatta on Friday, April 18, in Morgantown, West Virginia, on the Monongahela River.

This Week in Golf: The golf team will return to action on Monday, hosting the Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, West Virginia … this will be the 10th consecutive Mountaineer Invitational … West Virginia won the team titles in 2024, April 2021, 2019 and 2018 … Bowling Green won the event in 2017, Arkansas captured the team title in 2016 and Penn State won the inaugural event in 2015 … No. 8-ranked NC State won in October 2021 and No. 21 Oklahoma State won the Mountaineer Invitational in 2023 … West Virginia will be joined by 17 other teams at Pete Dye. No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 28 Texas Tech, No. 52 TCU, No. 74 Kentucky, Army West Point, Drexel, George Mason, James Madison, Marshall, Navy, Oral Roberts, Robert Morris, Tennessee Tech, Villanova, Virginia Tech, Western Kentucky and William & Mary will join the host No. 95 Mountaineers at Pete Dye … tee times will begin at 8:15 a.m. on Monday with all 18 teams scheduled to play 36 holes on Monday and then 18 holes on Tuesday, starting at 8 a.m. … the event is free and open to the public. Pete Dye Golf Club is a par-72, 7,308-yard course … this event will consist of five golfers per team with the top four counting in team scoring for each round … West Virginia’s lineup will consist of seniors Todd Duncan and Max Green along with juniors Carson Kammann, Westy McCabe and Kaleb Wilson … Hugh Donegan, Pierce Grieve, Ryan Leach, Harrison Thompson and Nick Turowski will compete as individuals for WVU.
