NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. (WECT) – Smart Start of New Hanover County has been awarded a grant to improve dental health literacy among young children.
The Smiles for Kids Grant from the Delta Dental Foundation will support Smart Start’s initiative to ensure families have access to educational resources that promote oral health habits.
“Through the Smiles for Kids Grant, Smart Start will provide high-quality children’s books focused on dental health education to families with children aged birth to five,” Smart Start stated in an announcement.
Smart Start says the program will help raise awareness of tooth decay, a childhood disease that disproportionately affects young children from low-income families.
“Early prevention through education is critical, as habits formed in the first five years have a lasting impact on oral health,” Smart Start said. “By integrating fun and relatable stories, this project aims to foster a love for reading while instilling essential oral hygiene practices.”
The books will be given through the New Hanover County Department of Health and Human Services WIC free book vending machine, the Smart Start Family Festival book giveaway, and other Smart Start outreach events.
