Puppy, kitten food sold in Pa. recalled due to possible contamination

Blue Ridge Beef, of Statesville, North Carolina, announced it is recalling 1,080 pounds of its Kitten Mix and 1,380 pounds of its Puppy Mix due to salmonella and listeria contaminations.

The pet food was distributed from Jan. 3-24 and was sold in retail stores located Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York State, Tennessee, Rhode Island and Wisconsin.

The Kitten Mix has a lot number of N26 0114 while the puppy mix has a lot number of N25 1230. Both were sold in two-pound bags.

The company said it became aware of the issue after getting a customer complaint of animal illness. Samples of the products were collected on March 20 by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets and tested positive for salmonella and listeria.

Pets that contract salmonella or listeria infections can be lethargic and have bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will only have a decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected pets can be contagious to other animals and humans. If your pet is showing any of these symptoms or has consumed these products, contact your veterinarian.

Salmonella or listeria symptoms in humans include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. They can also sometimes lead to more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Anyone exhibiting these signs after touching the recalled pet food should contact their healthcare providers.

Anyone who bought the recalled products should return them to their place of purchase or destroy the food so that children, pets, and wildlife cannot access it. Do not sell or donate the pet food. Do not feed it to pets or any other animals. Be sure to wash and sanitize any pet food bowls, cups, and storage containers. And make sure to wash and sanitize your hands after handling any recalled food or any utensils that come in contact with recalled food.
