More than 2,000 pounds of puppy and kitten food recalled for salmonella, listeria

Over two thousand pounds of Blue Ridge Beef puppy and kitten food is being recalled for being tainted with both salmonella and listeria.

In a statement on the FDA website, Blue Ridge Beef warned that their contaminated two-pound mixes of puppy food and kitten food, respectively, were sold from Jan. 3, 2025, to Jan. 24, 2025.

Both salmonella and listeria can be given to humans and pets alike from tainted foodstuffs, so be sure to monitor yourself and your pets closely as these bacteria can also stick to unclean surfaces.

“Pets with salmonella or listeria infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans,” the statement explains.

Humans have a similar reaction to these bacteria, with “nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever” being the most common symptoms. In more severe cases, these bacteria “can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.”

Naturally, if you or your pet are feeling these symptoms, it is best to call the doctor or vet. It is also highly recommended to “wash and sanitize” any bowls, utensils surfaces, and body parts that the contaminated food came into contact with.

The impacted food was sold in the following states, as listed in the statement:

  • Connecticut
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • Tennessee
  • Virginia
  • Wisconsin

The Blue Ridge Beef Puppy Mix impacted has a lot number of N25 1230, while the Blue Ridge Beef Kitten Mix has a lot number of N26 0114.

If you find these numbers on your Blue Ridge Beef packages, the statement urges you to either return the product to where you bought it, or to get rid of it in a way that safe for both humans and animals, both domestic and wild alike.

If you have any questions regarding the recall, the statement points to two different forms of communication with Blue Ridge Beef: via email with [email protected], or by calling 704-873-2072 any time Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.
