VICKSBURG, Miss. (VDN) — The Vicksburg Kiwanis Club hosted Kids & Big Rigs on Saturday morning, offering a hands-on experience with helicopters, trains, dump trucks, fire trucks, police vehicles and more for children of all ages. The event took place from 8 a.m. to noon in the parking lot across from the Levee Street Warehouse.
After attending a similar event in Madison, Miss., with her son, Madison Carpenter was inspired to bring the idea to Vicksburg.
“It seemed easy at the time,” Carpenter said. “But now after planning one, it takes a little more than what I thought—but it’s turned out to be a really good event. We had a lot of volunteers: both individuals and businesses volunteering their equipment and time. It’s been really nice.”
Carpenter said she hopes to make Kids & Big Rigs an annual occurrence.
“You never know about your first event,” she said, laughing. “Last night I was anxious, this morning I was anxious—but then once people started coming in, it actually worked out.”
David Blackledge, Vicksburg Kiwanis president, expressed gratitude for the support of the community and commended Carpenter for leading the event.
“Madison Carpenter did an outstanding job in coordinating the entire event,” Blackledge said. “We’ve had a lot of people here today, and we’re just thankful for everybody coming out and supporting our event—including the vendors that brought all of the equipment and trucks, as well as the Mississippi Highway Patrol for bringing the helicopter from the Jackson area. Everybody pitched in to make it a great event for the children of our great community.”
