Cedar Key residents celebrate expansion of food pantry services

CEDAR KEY, Fla. (WCJB) -After months of delays due to disasters such as hurricanes and fires, residents in Cedar Key were finally able to celebrate the expansion of services of their food pantry Sunday afternoon.

“I came here one day, and they said they needed some help, so I’ve been helping ever since,” John Franke, a volunteer, shared.

The Cedar Key Food Pantry is mainly volunteer-based and has been up and running since 2002.

“I see a lot of people in the community that don’t have much, and some of them are disabled. They come here and have a fixed income with very little to live on. They don’t have enough to eat, so we’re more than glad to help them out with more than just food,” Franke added.

For the past 5 years, the food pantry has been located in a quaint building that the group who runs the pantry now owns, allowing them to expand services.

The director, Sue Colson, says the building owner gifted the location because she was so moved after seeing what this pantry does for the community.

“She gave us the building so we would never have to worry about leaving Cedar Key, that we have a presence in Cedar Key forever. but we want to use it for social services as well as food. This happened at Christmas, but we couldn’t celebrate until now because of all the disasters.”

In the past year, the coastal island was hit with hurricanes and a fire.

TV20 asked Colson what she hopes to see for the future of Cedar Key.

“Less need an expansion of services, but I don’t think there will be less need.”

The food pantry is open every Wednesday from 2 to 4:30. They provide disaster relief, social and V.A. services, mental health resources, and of course, food.
