April school vacation is coming up quickly, and so is the need to plan for it.
With the week off for kids and still a work week for many parents, winging it isn’t always an option. Luckily the South Shore has no shortage of things to do − both week-long and one-day events covering everything from getting outdoors to getting on stage.
The one catch is that many of the programs require registrations, so now is the time to get cracking on seeing what’s out there to before all the slots get filled.
To help out, we’ve come up with five suggestions to avoid a week’s worth of “I’m bored” and “There’s nothing to do.”
During April school vacation, Quincy Recreation will run multiple programs throughout the city for students in grades 3 through 8. While the programs are free, registration is required by signing up at Quincyma.myrec.com.
Programs include street hockey, which is broken into teams for kids in grade 3-5 (9:30-11:30 a.m.) and 6-8 (11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.). The dates and location are:
- Tuesday, April 22 at Perkins Field (next to Merrymount School)
- Wednesday, April 23 (Squantum Field behind Squantum School)
- Thursday, April 24 ( Brill Field, Houghs Neck, across from the Quincy Yacht Club)
The games are played in sneakers, and participants are encouraged to bring their own sticks. Any child needing equipment is asked to contact the recreation department, which will supply all the other equipment.
There is plenty of field and court space to play multiple games with multiple age groups at the same time for grades 3-8 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The dates and locations are:
- Tuesday, April 22, Fore River Field Rec Sports (Quincy Point, Nevada Road and Beechwood Street)
- Wednesday, April 23, South-West Middle School (Roberts Street Field and Courts)
- Thursday, April 24, Bishop Field/Montclair School.
Volleyball is also scheduled for grades 6-8 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 25, at Central Middle School.

The Academy of the Company Theatre is offering a one-day workshop over April vacation for teens who may have been bitten by the acting bug but get butterflies in their stomachs at the thought of being on stage.
From noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, teens ages 13-19 are invited to learn the skills needed to successfully audition for theatrical productions. The workshop will cover song preparation, improvisation exercises to help with character development, dance basics and theatre etiquette before ending with cold readings.
Students don’t need to prepare anything ahead of time to participate in this class.
Visit the Company Theatre’s Academy page at Companytheatre.com to register for the $35 class. Waitlists are available if a program is full.
The Company theatre is located at 30 Accord Park Drive in Norwell.
The North South River Watershed Association will hold an outdoor program for kids ages 9-13 during school vacation week.
The program led by instructor Brian Taylor of the North South River Watershed Association will be held from 9-11:30 a.m. from Tuesday, April 22, to Friday, April 25.
The program costs $130. Pick-up and drop-off will occur at Hartsuff Park in Rockland, and transportation to and from daily activities will be provided by a North South River Watershed Association van. Participants should bring a water bottle, a snack and dress in weather-appropriate clothing each day.
Each day of the program features a different outdoor adventure. On Tuesday, the activity will be fishing. Wednesday will focus on geocaching, followed by a game of capture the flag on Thursday. The week will conclude on Friday with a shelter-building activity. The activities are subject to change based on weather and other considerations.
Registration can be completed online at Rocklandma.myrec.com under the “events” tab on a first-come, first-served basis. Spots are secured only after payment is received, and no refunds are issued once the program begins.
