Walmart recalls more than 1,500 cases of food in 28 states

Walmart has recalled over 1,500 cases of celery sticks due to potential deadly contamination.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced on Thursday afternoon that bags of Marketside Celery Sticks have been recalled from Walmart stores across 28 states.

The produce company, Duda Farm Fresh Foods, Inc., warned customers about possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination in 1,587 celery cases.

This bacterial contamination causes listeriosis, a possibly fatal disease. Health experts said that symptoms can include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and muscle aches.

Severe contamination can lead to convulsions, confusion, and eventually death.

The product UPC for the recalled cases includes 6 81131 16151 0. The products have four sticks in a bag.

“The potential for contamination was discovered during random sampling by the Georgia Department of Agriculture from a Georgia store location where one of multiple samples yielded a positive test result,” the FDA said.

The states where the celery sticks were sold include Alabama, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming, as well as Washington, D.C.

While the celery has not caused any recorded illnesses, the FDA urged consumers to discard these celery sticks.

This comes after the select recall on Frito Lay’s Tostitos tortilla chips for undeclared milk was reclassified to the most severe ranking, meaning there is a “reasonable probability” that eating it “will cause serious adverse health consequences or death” for those with milk allergies.

This week the company announced that less than 1,300 13-ounce bags of Tostitos Cantina Traditional Yellow Corn Tortilla Chips were recalled for potentially containing nacho cheese-flavored tortilla chips made with milk, posing a serious threat to those with dairy allergies. The Food and Drug Administration moved up the recall to Class I, which means eating the item poses a “reasonable probability” that eating it “will cause serious adverse health consequences or death” for those with milk allergies.

Recently, there have been recalls for some Coca-Cola cans, a popular detergent, a coffee creamer and a beloved chocolate bar, among others.

“No allergic reactions related to this matter have been reported to date. No other Tostitos products, flavors, sizes or variety packs are recalled… Less than 1,300 bags are included in the recall,” the company wrote in a statement.
