Tariffs impact Spokane car enthusiasts and shows

SPOKANE, Wash. – Car enthusiasts in Spokane are concerned about potential cost increases due to new tariffs on car parts. President Trump’s 25 percent tariffs on car parts, including aluminum and steel from overseas, are now in effect.

At the Spokane Speed and Custom Car Show, many expressed concerns about the future. Joe Fredericks, a car owner and restoration business owner, shared his thoughts on the situation. “It’s just depends on how much you know the prices are going to double. Is it going to triple yeah, it’s going to affect a lot of people building their cars,” he said.

Fredericks noted that while some enthusiasts have already secured their parts and prices, the uncertainty remains. “The enthusiasts that I know have already gotten a lot of their car parts and prices all ready,” he added.

Gordon Grant, of the Inland Northwest Car Club Council, discussed the broader impact on car shows. “A lot of people are going to have to pick and choose as to what to do as far events,” he stated. He explained that budget cuts for gas and entry fees could limit participation.

Fredericks expressed hope despite the looming questions. “Everyone really enjoys these cars. They enjoy the hobby. I hope they can continue on,” he said during Saturday’s show.

Grant emphasized the importance of focusing on the next generation of car enthusiasts, even with uncertainties. “It’s going to be strong for a while.  We’re not going away,” he said.

For more information on the tariffs, Washington State has created an online Tariff Information and Resource Guide available on the Washington State Department of Commerce website.
