Hartselle man charged after children found living in feces-filled home, test positive for drugs

MORGAN CO., Ala. (WAFF) – A Hartselle man is facing multiple counts of chemical endangerment of a child after some of his children tested positive for drugs and lived in a home filled with feces, rodents and rotten food.

According to WAFF 48 News partners Decatur Daily, 43-year-old Roy Lee Woods returned to his home on Hobb Ward Road with his five children after living with his mother. It is believed his mother used methamphetamine in his presence and his children.

In January, Woods was given a hair test by the Morgan County Correctional Court Services Lab. A few days later, his results returned positive for amphetamines and THC. The results also indicated environmental exposure to methamphetamine.

The Department of Human Resources raised concerns towards the children’s mother, 34-year-old Paige Annette Davis, as they believed she had been staying in the home around the children, despite being told not to due to concerns about exposure to harmful substances. Davis pleaded guilty to a chemical endangerment of a child charge in 2014.

As reported by the Decatur Daily, DHR was unable to find Davis for drug testing.

On March 25, Davis and Woods were spotted heading toward Woods’ home on Hobb Ward Road in two separate vehicles. Court records indicated that the two had lived in the same house.

According to the Dectaur Daily, Woods stopped at the end of the long gravel roadway, obstructing the deputies while Davis drove down the driveway.

Woods told deputies that Davis could not have accessed his trailer without a key and claimed not to know why she was there. He suggested that she run into the nearby woods, but deputies later determined she was inside the trailer.

The affidavit read that during this time, Davis was continuously texting Woods, asking what the deputies wanted.

Woods gave deputies consent to search his trailer and when they entered, they could hear him talking to someone.

During the search, an affidavit claims that deputies discovered “human and animal feces all over the place, spoiled and rotten food and insects as well as rodents throughout the residence and the children’s rooms.”

Deputies found “numerous sharp objects, including knives” lying on the ground. An infant was found running around the property barefoot.

Deputies could not immediately locate Davis and requested that DHR come to the home.

Woods and the children went back inside the trailer and the children began shouting “she’s in here, she’s inside,” as Davis pushed past Woods and tried to flee.

Davis ran and attempted to get back into her vehicle when deputies deployed a taser. She was taken into custody. The affidavit states that Woods then became irate and resisted arrest.

Medical personnel arrived on the scene and determined that the children needed to be taken to the hospital due to skin irritation. The children’s aunt took them to Decatur Morgan Hospital.

Animal control took custody of three dogs from the property, and Davis’s and Woods’s vehicles were towed.

The two were transported to Morgan County Jail.

Davis was charged with attempting to elude and resisting arrest. She was released on March 27 on a $300 bond.

Woods was charged with obstructing government operations and resisting arrest. He was released on March 26 on a $300 bond.

Hair follicle tests were administered to his five children on March 28. Three of the children tested positive for THC, methamphetamine and amphetamines.

Initially, the children had been taken back to Woods’ home, but DHR obtained a pickup order and said they would be taking the children back into their custody.

Woods was arrested and charged with three counts of chemical endangerment of a child on Thursday. He has since been released from the Morgan County Jail on a $7,500 bond.
