LAFAYETTE, La. (NEWS 15) — Federal cost-cutting measures are now impacting local food banks, with significant changes affecting Second Harvest Food Bank.
The food bank reported that modifications to federal food programs might delay or cancel expected deliveries.
“The TEFAP program is a government program with partnerships with food banks like Second Harvest Food Bank,” said Paul Scelfo of Second Harvest Food Bank. “Over the past quarter, that program was able to distribute 1.1 million pounds of food into Acadiana. With these cuts, that’s gonna affect that by 240,000 pounds of food will be cut because of these budget cuts.”
He further explained that the cuts mean a shortage of 192,000 meals for Acadiana over the next two quarters.
Second Harvest also noted that the program allowing them to buy fresh food from local farmers has been discontinued.
The food bank is calling on the community for assistance during this challenging time.
