Blue Ridge Beef is recalling puppy and kitten food due to contamination with salmonella and listeria, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The recalled products include 1,080 pounds of two-pound logs of Kitten Mix Lot # N26 0114 and 1,380 pounds of their two-pound logs of Puppy Mix Lot # N25 1230.
Lot numbers are stamped in the clips on the end of the bags, as noted by the FDA.
These products were distributed between Jan. 3 and Jan. 24. The mixes are packaged in clear plastic and primarily sold in stores located in: New York, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Rhode Island and Wisconsin.
After a customer complained of animal illness, the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets collected a sample of the products on March 20. Then, on April 1, the firm was informed by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture that the products tested positive for both salmonella and listeria, according to the FDA.
Animals who eat the product could be affected by salmonella and listeria; humans who handle the products, especially without washing their hands after contamination, are also at risk.
Individuals contaminated with salmonella or listeria are urged by the FDA to monitor themselves for symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, blood diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Salmonella and listeria could also result in more serious ailments such as arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Those experiencing any of these symptoms after contact with the products are advised to seek out a health care professional.
Pets with these infections could exhibit lethargic behavior and have symptoms such as diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. As explained by the FDA, some animals may only have decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. If a pet has eaten the recalled product(s) and has symptoms, the FDA suggests contacting a veterinarian.
Infected but otherwise healthy pets may also be a risk as they can carry the infections and spread them to other animals or humans.
Consumers who purchased these products are urged by the FDA to return them or destroy them. Customers are asked to wash and sanitize their hands after handling the products. Containers and utensils that come into contact with the recalled food should also be cleaned.
