A Comfort Food Favorite From the 70’s is Back in Connecticut

It’s almost Easter, have you been eating fish and chips through Lent? Good news, an old comfort food friend from the 1970’s has quietly made a comeback.

Most kids love burgers, chicken nuggets and hot dogs, but I loved it when my parents or grandma took us to the Arthur Treacher’s Fish and Chips in Waterbury. There were quite a few around Connecticut serving up crispy, fried pieces of white cod fish, with a few squirts of malt vinegar, and those fries, so good. Here’s a classic ad that I found online –

Arthur Treacher’s was one of America’s largest fast seafood companies in the late 1970’s, at their peak there were over 800 of them. The corporation buyouts started in the 1980’s, and the many locations withered away over the next couple of decades.

The current owner of the Arthur Treacher’s Fish and Chips concept is a company based on Long Island – Nathan’s Famous. My wife and I are obsessed with their french fries much more so than their annual hot dog eating contest. There are only a few standalone Arthur Treacher’s restaurants in the US, they’re in Ohio and New York, but Nathan’s has started to introduce Nathan’s/Arthur Treacher’s hybrids in food courts, and the second one has just opened up in Connecticut.

The first Nathan’s Famous/Arthur Treacher’s Fish and Chips hybrid restaurant around here opened up in the Trumbull Mall just over a year ago, in March 2024. The second has just opened up this week in the Stamford Town Center Mall. Hartford County has the only two Long John Silvers in Connecticut, and now Fairfield County is Arthur’s house.

Where Would a Season of The White Lotus: Connecticut Take Place?

Did you know that Mike White, the creator of Max’s The White Lotus, went to Wesleyan in Middletown? If Connecticut could offer enough tax credits to lure the mastermind of our favorite show back here to shoot the next season, where do you think The White Lotus: Connecticut would take place?
