Michigan Sports Writers Division 1 girls all-state basketball teams

Every so often, a player comes around capable of completely changing a program.

In the years leading up to Anna Wypych’s Rockford varsity basketball seasons, there was a time when the Rams made goals to be competing just for district trophies.

Over the last four years, during Wypych’s career at Rockford, things changed. The Rams compiled a 104-8 record, two Division 1 semifinal appearances, two state championship game appearances and a state championship.

It made Wypych, who earned the state’s Miss Basketball honor, an easy choice for the Michigan Sports Writers Division 1 Player of the Year.

Wypych, a 6-foot guard who signed with Butler, headlines the group of athletes recognized on the Division 1 all-state teams from a panel of Michigan Sports Writers, following a season of averaging over 22 points a game.

Belleville head coach Jason Wilkins, whose team earned a 61-48 title over Rockford in the finals, was recognized as the Division 1 Coach of the Year.

It’s the final release of all-state teams by the Michigan Sports Writers, following the Division 2, Division 3 and Division 4 lists.
