Alabama Cooperative Extension Food Safety launches online series

DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – The Alabama Cooperative Extension Food Safety launches an online series to help you can and preserve your food.

The new series on food preservation can be can be found on Youtube.

The series is called “Canning and Preserving: Pick, Pack and Preserve.”

It’s full of videos demonstrating how to preserve fruits and vegetables properly.

“It’s important that people know how to preserve their food because when you can get food, especially if it is not canned properly, you can get botulism, said Bridgette Brannon,” Southeastern Food Safety and Quality Extension Agent. “If that lid is not sealed or if that product was not processed in time. And so that’s the whole idea to keep people from getting food poisoning.“

Although some food extension classes are offered at your county extension office, you can now have them at your fingertips.

“Number one, they have easy access; they can go to it day or night anytime, you know, if they are in the middle of canning their jam or jelly or whatever they are canning. They’re like, oh, I want to make sure I’m doing this, and you can’t get someone on the phone, then you can watch the videos, you can pause them, you can start over, you can do whatever.”

Although they are starting these videos online, certain county extension offices will still hold in-person classes.

The next video released will be about pressure-canning green beans.

If you would like to suggest their next video, contact your local county extension office and ask to speak with your area’s food safety and quality agent.
