Students recognized for building massive canned food structures for a good cause

ENDWELL, N.Y. (WBNG) — An igloo, a rocket and even a box of crayons – all made from canned food!

Teams of students designed these massive structures as part of “Kids CAN Build.”

This is a community event that raises awareness about hunger. Nearly a dozen Southern Tier schools participated in the competition.

“It’s a blank canvas for students,” said Co-Chair of Kids CAN Build Jocelyn Zayac. “Some of them are as small as kindergarten, which is pretty amazing.”

While the structures are amazing, the cause the students give to is even more noble. The cans will soon make their way to CHOW. They were able to collect more than 18,000 pounds of food, which is equal to about nine tons.

“The end goal is to help those who are hungry,” said CHOW Director Les Ayelsworth. “The kids are learning not only how to build stuff but what food insecurity is.”

The students were judged on Best Meal, Best Use of Label, Best Structure and one Best Overall award.

Maine-Endwell’s Homer Brink Elementary School took home a “Best Meal” award. They were the ones who created the igloo!

“It was really cool. It was fun to build, and it was one of the best things I did,” said 2nd grader John Coyle.

About $30,000 was also raised in funds. CHOW will use the money to provide about 150,000 meals.
