North Carolina mother charged after her 4 kids found states away

HAVELOCK, N.C. (WBTV) – An eastern North Carolina mother was charged after her four kids were found states away on Wednesday.

An amber alert was issued for the four kids Wednesday evening out of Havelock in Craven County after their mom was believed to have taken them earlier in the day, despite not having legal custody.

Within an hour or two of the alert being issued, the kids were found safe in Bryans Road, Md., which is in the southern part of Maryland, about 40 minutes from Washington, D.C.

Havelock police said the kids were 13, 12, six and one years old. They were in foster care as part of a court order.

After the kids were found, police said the mother, Brittney McCullough, was charged with four counts of felony child abduction.

Before the children were found, police said they likely drove up I-95, which would have been consistent with where they were found. For reference, Bryans Road is about five and a half hours north of Havelock.

Havelock police said local, state and federal agencies were involved in the search for the kids, including the U.S. Marshals Service and FBI offices in Charlotte, Baltimore and Washington.

A man, Rolunte Leroy Wright, was also charged in the case. He was faced with four counts of felonious aiding and abetting.
