This Is Anfield writer Sam Millne believes Mohamed Salah’s contract extension talks haven’t been “as cut and dry as some people say”, amid reports that Liverpool are moving closer to agreeing a new deal with the forward.

Speaking on BBC’s Total Sport Merseyside, Millne said: “There is a wider picture to be looked at where Salah has always declined in the second half of the season throughout his Liverpool career. He has actually scored over half of his goals in the first half of campaigns.

“I also don’t think this contract situation is as cut and dry as some people say it is because you do have to look at his age and his wages.

“The thing with Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk is they are so athletically different to a lot of players.

“Salah has adapted his game so he is now coming a bit deeper to collect the ball and he is now being a bit more creative.

“You can see what an athlete he is – it is almost like as his pace has declined, his strength has increased. That is why he still holds that little edge on defenders.

“He hasn’t been as good in the past few weeks but this is Mohamed Salah we are talking about, he could go on and score the winner next weekend from 20 yards out and dribble past three players.”
