Munch Market, located in the Teeter Courtyard is a new food-focused experience added to the First Friday at the NOTO Arts & Entertainment District.
The market features local food trucks and vendors offering a wide range of eats and drinks.
Pedro Concepcion, who is CEO at NOTO, said bringing Munch Market to NOTO for First Friday festivities was important because there needed to be more food options, especially after Norseman Brewery closed its doors.
“It initially started with Day of the Dead,” said Concepcion. “These vendors were here. It was packed, and it was a thing so we thought maybe we could do this every First Friday and give opportunities to people to sell their food. And if it works for them, maybe find them a place where they can be a brick and mortar here in NOTO.”
Munch Market gives small businesses new opportunities
Jordy De La Torre, co-owner of Los GemElotes, said being part of the Munch Market gives his business more exposure to the community. Los GemElotes offers a variety of Mexican street-styled corn.
Marisa Bermudez — whose mother Elvira Bermudez owns Antojitos Bermudez — said opportunities like Munch Market are fun because they help businesses. Antojitos Bermudez at 2102 S.E. California Ave. offers Mexican-styled sweet treats.
“We’re just trying something new. We’ve been here once, which was pretty good, so we decided to try it again,” Marisa Bermudez said.
Elvira Bermudez said she’s doing new events outside of her brick-and-mortar store to spread the word about her business and give people the opportunity to try the sweet treats she offers.
How will you know what vendors will be at Munch Market?
To know which food trucks and vendors will be at Munch Market every First Friday, Concepcion encourages people to use the Mobile Munch application.
Users can download the Mobile Munch app, tap the Market icon, and check out the lineup of food vendors. The app works by allowing area food truck owners to provide information regarding upcoming dates, times, locations, menu options and pricing for their businesses, The Capital-Journal previously reported.
In addition to Antojitos Bermudez and Los GemElotes setting up at the April 4 Munch Market, Conchis Cuisine and La Casa De Los Abuelos were also present.
Concepcion said his team is working to bring a more diverse food scene for upcoming Munch Markets at First Fridays. He said they hope to bring in a creole food-based vendor as well as an Indian food-based one.
“We want to bring new initiatives to NOTO and to be completely honest, make first Fridays the place to be,” Concepcion said. “My idea and hope is that we get more vendors so we can have different types of cuisines.”
