Report gives reasons Mass. is the best state for kids’ healthcare. One is soda related

Sufficient access to health care, high physical activity, low obesity rates and good dental hygiene led Massachusetts to be crowned the state with the best healthcare for children on a new report.

On Tuesday, WalletHub released its list of the “Best & Worst States for Children’s Healthcare.” Massachusetts placed first amongst all 50 states for several factors including having the lowest percent of children who are uninsured.

Only 1.5% of children in Massachusetts are uninsured, according to the study’s findings. The commonwealth was also found to have the lowest infant mortality rate in the country and one of the lowest death rates for children aged 14 and under.

“Massachusetts is the best state for children’s health, with the fourth-highest percentage of children who had both a medical and a dental preventative care visit in the past 12 months,” the study read. “Access to preventative care helps children avoid serious medical issues and also minimizes costs for parents.”

Massachusetts children were also found to drink less soda than kids from any other state — a significant contributor to good dental hygiene.

Other New England states also placed among the top 10 best states for children’s healthcare. Rhode Island followed right behind Massachusetts at second, Vermont ranked fifth and Connecticut ninth.
